How Is God Calling You to Serve Your People?
The holiday season is fast approaching. For me, as much as I look forward to it, I also kind of dread it. Wait, wait! Hear me out! I love this time of year, but I really wish it would slow down so that I could savor it. At the same time, I really can’t believe it’s already time to start planning out the holiday gatherings and meals, and I can’t help but think about how much work it’s going to be.
For once, I’d kind of like to do things differently. I’d like to experience this season in a different way. Instead of only looking to self-satisfy, I wonder if finding ways to love on others, serve them, and bring a little slice of joy into their lives would give me the ability to slow down and experience the true reason for the season.
Afterall, God has called us to love others, first and foremost, after loving Him.
Last week, I had you ask some questions to help determine you whos—the people in your life that you are called to love and serve.
Often times, our who and our what are linked. Who are you called to serve and what is it you’re being called to do?
If I’m called to write, I need to know who I’m writing for before I start to write. Determining my who will help determine the topics about which I write. There must be a purpose to my passion, and the purpose is serving others using my God-given gifts.
Let’s take a look at some well-known Bible stories as examples of how God not only calls us, He directs us toward our who, and gives us a clear mission:
God called Adam and Eve to subdue the animals and populate the earth.
God called Noah to build an ark for his family and the animals in preparation for a great flood.
God called Moses to lead the Israelites out of Egypt and slavery and into the Promised Land.
God called Jonah to go preach the the people of Nineveh so they could be saved from God’s wrath.
By no means is this an exhaustive list. I only wanted you to see that when God calls us to do something, He is clear on who we are supposed to serve and how we are to serve them.
If God is calling you to serve and love on mothers of children with special needs, what do you think you might do to meet them where they are, love them like Jesus would, and lead them into abundance? What about if God is calling you to serve middle-schoolers? Empty-nesters? Law enforcement families? Missionaries?
The list goes on and on of who you may be called to serve, and you may even be called to serve more than one who. As a mom and wife, of course, I am called to serve my family. As a writer and a life coach, I feel called to serve women who need guidance in clarifying their dreams and taking steps into what God has called them to. As a Christian, I am called to lead others to Jesus by encouraging to seek God above all else in their life.
What about you?
This week’s exercise is to take out a notepad and write down your who’s and how you feel God is calling you to serve them. Start with the easy ones first, and then think about the other whos that you are impacting daily without knowing it. Go back through last week’s questions if necessary. Use a separate page for each who that you’d like to consider.
If you’re a parent, your obvious whos are your children, but what about your children’s friends and other moms that you see regularly? If you’re a teacher, they’re your students, but maybe also fellow teachers and the parents of your students.
Maybe God is simply calling you to pray for them, or live in a way that makes them see that you’re different. Perhaps God has asked you to physically serve these people in some capacity that makes use of your unique talents, gifts, skills and abilities.
If you’re not quite sure, ask God to show you what to do and who to do it for.
Next week, our final week in this series, we will answer discuss the trust factor of living a life of servitude. It’s not always easy to be a servant, in fact, it can be exhausting. As we step into our calling of loving and serving others, putting their needs before our own, we may find ourselves asking the questions, “What about me? Who’s going to take care of me?” Be sure to join me next week as I deal with these authentic questions.
